50 Shades of Duke 🐾

🇬🇧  Renovating Roccaseta wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. When we started, we had enthusiasm, optimism and, as we now know, a fair amount of recklessness.

Then the work began and the universe started working against us. 😅
In order: two waves of Covid, the suspension of flights, not exactly a minor detail with us in Turin and Roccaseta in Sicily, the outrageous increases caused by the Superbonus, shortages of materials that suddenly seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth and, just when we thought we had seen it all, a ship got stuck in the Suez Canal, completely blocking the passage and among the many ships stuck behind it waiting for the canal to reopen, there was, of course, the one carrying all our machinery and electronic components.
As if all that weren’t enough, making things even more complicated was the difficulty of getting the contractor to understand what we had in mind.
Because when you’re renovating, deciding on the spaces, the shapes, where to put a window or create an opening is relatively simple: these are choices you can put down on paper, look at, rethink, redraw and change.
But explaining a taste, a feeling, an atmosphere, making someone understand how you want to feel when you walk into that house and translating all of this into materials, colours and finishes… is a completely different story.
We wanted Roccaseta to preserve the soul of the Sicilian countryside: local materials, textured surfaces, warm, dusty and lived-in colours. A house that felt as though it had always been there, but at the same time was welcoming, functional and able to meet the needs of today.
To give you an idea: old but new, faded but not too much, authentic but current.
A delicate balance of seemingly contradictory requirements and, above all, ones that were often perfectly clear only to us. 😂
Then we got to the finishes and colours.
And that’s when the delicate balance became a balancing act.
The conversations went something like this:
“We’d like it beige, but just a little less.”
“So, greyer?”
“Maybe… but warmer.”
“So taupe?”
“Not exactly.”
“Tuff?”
“Almost.”
A real struggle.
Until Duke came into the picture 🐶. At a certain point, in fact, we realised that the colour reference we had been trying to explain for months had been right in front of us all along: our living colour palette, our very own four-legged Pantone🤎:
Pietra Dorata.
Antico Tufo.
Pietra Campa.
Pietra Serena.
All variations of those shades we had been trying to describe for months: cream, warm beige, sand, biscuit, taupe, all the way to the deeper tones of earth and stone.
A collection of colours that even the most demanding interior designer would have approved of.
Forget the moodboard. 🐾

“Quindi tortora?”
“Non proprio.”
“Tufo?”
“Quasi.”

Una vera fatica.

Finché è entrato in gioco Duke 🐶.
