SEASONALITY IS A FAITH
Finally, the season of oranges has arrived.
Now you can walk into a bar and order an orange juice without triggering any disapproving grimaces.
Because, let me tell you: in Sicily, ordering an orange juice in July is like asking for a panettone in mid-August. Unthinkable.
Here, no one would dream of consuming an orange that’s been sitting in a fridge for months.
In Sicily, seasonality is not just a detail, it’s a true faith.
An unwritten law that governs daily life with the same authority as a well-conducted orchestra. Here, we don’t discuss it, we don’t negotiate: every fruit and every vegetable has its moment, and woe to anyone who dares break this sacred harmony.
December? Oranges, mandarins, and lemons take center stage in the winter.
February? Carciofi (artichokes) in abundance. You’ll see them stacked like bouquets of flowers, only spikier (and definitely more useful at the dinner table).
June? Cherries and apricots arrive like little bursts of sweetness, their juicy flavor a reminder that summer is near.
Then comes summer, the queen of all seasons. Peaches perfume the air, figs are like sugar gems, melons are irresistible, and watermelons are as big as a car hood.
Now, try asking for mandarins in July or strawberries in November. The greengrocer will look at you with a mixture of pity and understanding reserved for foreigners. And the response will always come with a smile: “Everything in its own time!”
Dicembre? Arance, mandarini e limoni. Sono loro i protagonisti dell’inverno,
Febbraio? Carciofi in abbondanza.
Ora, provate a chiedere mandarini a luglio o fragole a novembre.
